NWMMM Group Sunday May 28th 2023

At 10.00a.m on Sunday morning only Iain Wilson and his wife, Jayne on her own bike and James Upshon (Guest) turned up, numerous members sent their apologies, but the turnout was disappointing as all including past members had been informed that it was probably Iain’s last meeting before he and Jayne relocate to the other side of the Country.

Iain was until recently the Group Treasurer, a position he held from the start of the group on May 7th 2016 when we met at Wellington Park. He was also the leader of the ride-outs we had, taking us to many places of interest and good cafes, most of which have been documented on this website. On behalf of the Group, and on my own behalf I presented Iain with a suitable bottle of liquid refreshment to thank him for his help and all the work he did for the group.

To get back to Sunday, we set off from Croston, after a hearty breakfast on to Southport, which was busy, but keeping to the Coast Road we were soon through and on to the Formby Bye-Pass, turning off at the B5193 which a great deal quieter traffic-wise than the Formby Bye-pass, this road eventually brought us out in Little Crosby and then on to the Crosby Leisure Centre where we got parked. It was then just a short walk on to the beach and the art work of Antony Gormley entitled “Another Place.” This consists of 100 cast iron figures facing towards the sea, the figures are modelled on the artist’s own naked body.

The statues are spread over a great deal of the beach some at the waterline others near to land, stretching from Seaforth docks North to what was the old Coast Guard Station at Hall Road, Blundellsands. After we had walked out to two or three of the statues we headed back to the bikes and had an ice cream on the way. The run back was the direct route to Southport where I left, the others and headed for home. They carried on and ended up at Rivington Barn for a coffee and a natter.
